Description

Ulysses S. Grant. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885. First edition. Two octavo volumes. 584, [2, blank]; 647, [1, errata] pages. With a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait in each volume, two engraved plates, and numerous intertextual maps and illustrations throughout, few folding. Publisher's deluxe binding half brown morocco over cloth boards with gilt central facsimiles of medals on boards. Spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments with five raised bands. Marbled edges and endpapers.

Considered one of the greatest of all American memoirs, Mark Twain wrote: "This is the simple soldier who, all untaught of the silken phrase-makers, linked words together with an art surpassing the art of the schools and put into them a something which will still bring to American ears, as long as America shall last, the roll of his vanished drums and the tread of his marching hosts."

Condition: Very good. Bindings worn at the edges; spines scuffed with small areas of loss, especially at the foot of the spine of Volume I. Staining to the lower edge of the cloth on the boards. Volume I internally clean with some offsetting of the frontispiece onto the title page; Volume II internally clean.
