    First Edition of Grant's Memoirs

Ulysses S. Grant. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. In Two Volumes. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885. First edition. Two octavo volumes. 584, [2, blank]; 647, [1, errata] pages. With a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait in each volume and forty-eight intertextual maps and illustrations throughout. Publisher's deluxe binding of half brown morocco over cloth boards with gilt central facsimiles of medals on boards. Spines ruled, tooled, and lettered in gilt in compartments with five raised bands. Marbled edges and endleaves. Some rubbing and mild wear to bindings. Front blanks removed from both volumes, and rear leaf removed from Volume II, with some cracking to the related gutters. Overall, a very good set.

After leaving the presidency and suffering severe financial setbacks, Grant was persuaded by his friend Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) to write his memoirs, which Twain agreed to publish and edit. The writing went smoothly except for when Clemens would visit and smoke cigars that Grant could no longer enjoy due to his throat cancer (which would kill him virtually the day Grant completed his memoirs). Grant's Memoirs would become the best selling work in America in the nineteenth century, and netted Grant's widow Julia the equivalent of over $15,000,000 in today's currency. Many people consider this the finest work written about the Civil War. From the James and Deborah Boyd Collection.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
