    More Information:

Ulysses S. Grant. Personal Memoirs of U. S. Grant. New York: Charles L. Webster & Company, 1885-1886. First edition. Two octavo volumes. 584, [2, blank]; 647, [1, errata] pages. With a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait in each volume and forty-eight intertextual maps and illustrations throughout. Bound in the rarest publisher's binding of full black morocco, covers ruled and paneled in blind with blind-stamped central motifs of Grant, spines ruled in blind and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, gilt board edges and turn-ins, marbled endleaves, all edges gilt. Spines sunned to brown, bindings worn at joints and edges, a few gutters overopened. Ownership signature on front blanks of both volumes ("N. W. Rice/Boston"). Still, a good copy in a scarce binding, thought to be done mainly as a presentation to select people.
