Two Sets of Memoirs of Civil War Union Generals including Ulysses S. Grant. Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant. New York: Charles Webster, 1885. [and:] Phillip H. Sheridan. Personal Memoirs of P.H. Sheridan. New York: Charles Webster, 1888. Very good.

    More Information:

The Grant set has all maps and illustrations present. Both volumes have a large bookplate of Tarlton Fleming-Parsons of Cumbernauld on the front pastedowns. Both volumes also have the penciled name "Judge Patterson" on the front free endpaper. The flyleaf of Volume I has an additional name in pencil ("Walther"?). The front hinge of Volume I is cracked, and the first 250 or so pages are bumped at the bottom corner. Frontispiece of Volume II is foxed. Full gilt-stamped green cloth bindings are in great shape. Both volumes are in very good condition.

The Sheridan set has all maps and illustrations present. The fold-out map on page 238 of Volume I has a pencil eraser-sized stain in the bottom right corner - a stain that is also evident on the adjacent pages. The bindings of both volumes show some wear and rubbing, particularly to joints and extremities. Front board of Volume II is lightly bumped along the bottom edge. Half-bound in gilt-stamped brown leather over gilt-stamped brown cloth. Both volumes are in very good condition.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
