Two John Brunner First Editions from the Author's Library. Two association copies: Stand on Zanzibar. (New York: Doubleday & Co., 1968), first edition, 505 pages, black cloth with silver lettering and violet decorative stamping on the spine, 8vo (6.25" x 9.5"), dust jacket. John Brunner's Ex-libris bookplate affixed to the front endpaper. Handwritten note by Brunner on his personal stationery partially pasted down on the front free endpaper. It reads, "3rd July Publication is on 17th July & we're having a small party to celebrate. How about coming up & having a bite to eat with us beforehand? Shall we say 6 p.m. sharp? Best Jo. B." On the back portion of the stationery, there is additional writing in Brunner's hand, reading "I state fact, in the cold black and white of prose; And lo! the page blossoms into colour, Like a rose." Stand on Zanzibar was critically hailed upon its publication, and won the 1969 Hugo Award for the best science fiction novel. This copy is about fine, with very minor wear to the edges. The dust jacket is about very good, with minor edge wear and very slight chipping at the head and tail of the spine. A one-of-a-kind association copy of Brunner's masterpiece.
The Sheep Look Up First Edition. (New York: Harper and Row, 1972), first edition, 461 pages, half-cloth binding (green boards & black cloth) with silver lettering on spine, 8vo (5.75" x 8.25"), dust jacket. Deckled fore-edge. John Brunner's Ex-libris bookplate affixed to the front endpaper. Editorial marginalia by Brunner scattered throughout the novel. Released in 1972, The Sheep Look Up is the sequel to Stand on Zanzibar, and the second volume of a trilogy completed by The Shockwave Riders in 1975. This novel again displays Brunner's anger about and concern for the ecological health of our planet, where in his words, "we are doomed to endure." This copy is very good, with the spine slightly cocked and general edge wear. The dust jacket is very good as well, with minor wear to the corners and head and tail of the spine. Overall, this unique volume is very attractive. Rare chance to obtain two John Brunner association copies in one lot.
