William Bligh. A Voyage to the South Sea... For the Purpose of Conveying the Bread-Fruit tree to the West Indies, in His Majesty's Ship The Bounty... Including an Account of the Mutiny on Board the Said Ship. London: for George Nicol, 1792. First edition. Quarto (11.375 x 9 inches; 289 x 230 mm.). [x], 264 pages; frontispiece and seven inserted plates, five of which are folding. Contemporary mottled calf boards, double-ruled in gilt; recently rebacked to style, spine with five raised bands, tooled in gilt, gilt-lettered morocco label, compartments decoratively stamped and ruled in gilt; corners renewed; page edges sprinkled green; new endpapers. Boards slightly crazed near joints and edges with some minor wear to the gilt rules and a few surface scratches and couple deeper (but still relatively insignificant) scuffs; a couple small splashes to the rear board; board edges lightly worn. Top of the text block darkened; front hinge just starting; frontis foxed; light offsetting to the title-page, folding plates and leaves opposite plates; scant marginal soiling. Text clean and bright, very good or better. One of the more infamous Pacific voyages, source for the Charles Nordhoff and James Norman Hall novel Mutiny on the Bounty and the film adaptations that followed. "An extremely important book. This is the first edition of the official account of the Bounty expedition. It includes a somewhat revised version of the text of Bligh's narrative of the mutiny, previously published at London in 1790," Hill 135. From a Private Collection in St. Charles, IL.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
