    Theodore Irving. THE CONQUEST OF FLORIDA, BY HERNANDO DE SOTO. Philadelphia: 1835. 2 vols. 290, 302pp. Original cloth (worn, remnants of old institutional plates). Text lightly foxed and browned. Good or so. The first edition of the "early history of the country called Florida to the end of De Soto's invasion. It has generally been regarded as the standard work on this period." Larned. "This very interesting narrative of the celebrated expedition of Ferdinando de Soto, is a compilation from La Florida del Inca of Garcilaso de la Vega...Mr. Irving gives in the Appendix a sketch of the route, and places occupied by the expedition. The descriptions of the various tribes of Indians, the bloody battles between them and the Spaniards, and the obstinate resistance of the populous and thriving nations of savages, through which DeSoto and his devoted band passed, are not more historically valuable; but the narrative is more popularly interesting, than in the grave and quaint language of the original authors."
