    More Information:

Thomas Sprat (1635-1713), bishop of Rochester, wrote this work in reply to the French man Samuel de Sorbire's biting attack upon the English natural character, as given in the latter's Relation d'un Voyage en Angleterre. Actually, Sorbire's work was an elaboration of Evelyn's A Character of England (1659), although Evelyn did not agree with the elaboration, so that Evelyn is often credited with assisting in Sprat's work - even though the first edition of this work (August 1664) preceded Evelyn's replay by two months! Sprat's work is written in the form of a letter to Christopher Wren, and as a justification for Englishmen, accompanied by wit, it became very popular and went through many reprintings.
