The first series volume has an additional unlisted engraved plate facing page 54 by F. Herve, titled "Ancient Archway & Cavern in the Balkan Mountains." Contemporary half green calf over marbled paper covered boards, spine banded, gilt in compartments with titles gilt on black leather, all edges gilt, matching marbled endpapers. Bindings rubbed with some leather stripping but solid, lightly soiled; occasional foxing, light soiling, smudges, and few minor dampstains; else in very good condition. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

Walsh accepted the offer of the chaplaincy to the British embassy at Constantinople, remaining in that post for some years, during which time he made many extensive expeditions through Turkey and other parts of Asia. Having obtained a medical degree, he practiced as a physician on various occasions while in the more remote parts of that continent. From Constantinople he went to the embassy at St. Petersburg, to which he had been appointed chaplain, but only remained there a little while, proceeding in 1828 to Rio de Janeiro. His investigations of the extent of the slave trade in Brazil led to his being placed on the committee of the Society for the Abolition of Slavery. On his return to England in 1831 he was again sent to Constantinople.

Thomas Allom, 1804-1872. "He was as much artist as architect... he furnished the drawings for the series of illustrated works upon which his reputation rests. Amongst these may be named his 'Cumberland and Westmoreland,' 'Devonshire and Cornwall,' 'Scotland,' 'France,' 'Constantinople,' 'Asia Minor,' and 'China.' He exhibited for many years at the Royal Academy, 'where his charming pencil usually gained a place of honour.' He was frequently called upon to assist his professional brethren, and there are few artists who forget the vigour and beauty of the drawings." [DNB]

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
