Richard F[rancis]. Burton. Two Trips to Gorilla Land. And the Cataracts of the Congo. London: Sampson Low, Marston, Low, and Searle, 1876. First edition. Two volumes. Octavo. xiv, [2], 261, [1]; vi, [2], 355, [1] pages. Two folding maps, four inserted engraved plates, head-pieces, tail-pieces, initials and in-text engravings. Half morocco over marbled paper-covered boards; tooled in gilt; spine with five raised bands. All edges trimmed; top edge gilt. Marbled endpapers. Wear at edges, corners, joints, spine ends; corners bumped, slightly frayed; rubbing and spot soiling, mostly to morocco. Front board of first volume starting at bottom with split visible to about halfway up; some splitting of endpapers at hinges, but bindings still sound. Browning, spotting to edges of text block. Regular toning, scattered foxing and discoloration throughout; first folding map split along fold but not detached. Two marginal holes resembling a bite mark at fore-edge of M2, first volume. Very good text blocks in good bindings. With engraved bookplates of Edwin Parsons affixed to front paste-downs. Written in 1862 during Burton's time as consul at Fernando Po, the book was not published until 1876, in the early years of his diplomatic posting at Trieste (DNB). Penzer, p. 94.Auction Info
