[xvi], 107, [1, blank], [8, publisher's ads] pages. Four tinted lithographic plates. Publisher's original (purplish?) brown textured cloth; ruled in blind; spine lettered in gilt. Edges of text block rough-trimmed. Pale yellow endpapers. Housed in custom red cloth clamshell with spine lettered in gilt. Spine toned; mild wear to joints, spine ends and corners; some pale splash soiling to rear board. Effaced pencil signature to front free endpaper. Front hinge splitting with free endpaper starting; rear hinge mostly split with rear board coming detached. Scattered foxing to frontispiece, possibly from tissue guard, which is now browned; marginal brown splattering to pages 14-15; occasional instances of small spots of foxing, soiling throughout. Overall, a very good copy. With publisher's advertisements at rear. Burton's fourth published book and his last relaying his experiences in India while serving in the Bombay infantry. Penzer, p. 41.
