    More Information:

Pomponius Mela (fl 37-40 A.D.) wrote a geographical survey of the inhabited world. Hec divide the world into north and south hemispheres and five zones. The work was very popular.

Solinus (probably soon after 200 A.D.) wrote the Collectanea as a epitome of Pliny's Natural History. It is a geographical summary of parts of the known world, with remarks on origins, history, customs of nations, and products of countries. He mentions in his brief section on the British Isles the Tanatus, the stone jet, and the absence of snakes in Ireland. He introduced the name 'mare Mediterraneum.' His work was very popular in the Middle Ages and the Renaissance and went through numerous editions. It is interesting to note that the edition of 1520 mentions America with a map. STCN 164612. Brunet 4, p. 801. "Jolie edition." Graesse V,402. Schweiger 610.
