John Auldjo. Journal of a Visit To Constantinople, and Some of The Greek Islands, In The Spring and Summer of 1833. London: Longman, Rees, Orme, Brown, Green & Longman, 1835.

First edition. Inscribed by the author on the title page. Octavo. A6, B-R8, S2. xii, 259, [1] pages. Vignette on title page, seven etched plates by George Cruickshank. Contemporary half-green morocco over marbled boards [label of N. Boards rubbed along the edges, top edge trimmed, minor foxing on plates, front hinge cracked but sound, else very good condition. From the Krown & Spellman Collection.

John Auldjo, 1805-1886, geologist and Alpinist, was born July 26, 1805 in Montreal. His father's death left him independently wealthy and he spent much of his time traveling. He was one of the early climbers of Mont Blanc and his book on the climb is a classic of mountaineering. He also wrote a book on Vesuvius and Gell called him a "wet nurse to the volcano." He also authored this book on his travels in Greece and Turkey.

"The publication of this interesting account was inspired by "the intense curiosity...which exists at present to learn even the minutest particulars connected with Greece and Turkey" (Preface). It is dedicated by the author to his friend Sir William Gell and dated Naples, April 1835..."[Blackmer Cat.]
