East between 1664-1669 and 1671-1677. and acquired considerable
wealth as agent for the purchase of jewels to Shah Solyman III.
Driven from France by the persecution of Protestants, he was well
received in London and soon appointed court jeweler. "Montesquieu,
Rousseau, Gibbon, and Helvetius acknowledge the value of his

Mahometan nations ever published. Extracts from his works appear in
all the chief collections of travels, but there is no complete
English translation" (D.N.B.). Wing C2041.
