    G. F. Lyon. A Narrative of Travels in North Africa. London: 1821. First edition.

More Information: G[eorge] F[rancis] Lyon. A Narrative of Travels in Northern Africa, in the Year 1818, 19, and 20. Accompanied by Geographical Notices of Soudan, and of the Course of the River Niger. London: John Murray, 1821. First edition. Quarto. xii, 383, [1] pages. One engraved folding map and seventeen full-color lithographic plates, engraved from sketches drawn from life by Lyon himself. Half black straight-grain morocco over marbled paper-covered boards; gilt decoration and lettering; four raised bands at spine. All edges trimmed and stained red. Greenish-gray endpapers. Edge and joints wear to binding; corners somewhat bumped; rubbing and toning to boards; a few abrasions to morocco. Staining faded at edges of text block; top edge darkened. Very sparse foxing, spot soiling scattered throughout the text block and on plate margins; offsetting onto folding map, some wear at creases, one short tear at inner edge. Overall very good, interior of text block near fine. With unidentified armorial bookplate and engraved book-label of Wolfgang A. Herz affixed to front pastedown. Recounts a failed expedition with Joseph Ritchie to make it to central Africa overland from the north. Lyon adopted a false identity named Said-ben-Abdallah and together the paur made it has far as Murzuq before Ritchie died and Lyon was forced to turn back. "The account of his and Ritchie's journey was published as A Narrative of Travels in North Africa (1821), illustrated from Lyon's own drawings"--DNB.
