David Roberts. The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt, & Nubia. After Lithographs by Louis Haghe. From Drawings Made on the Spot by David Roberts, R. A. London: Day & Son, 1855-56. First quarto edition. Six volumes in three. Quarto (11.375 x 8 inches; 288 x 206 mm.). Various paginations. 249 tinted lithographic plates, including maps, titles and portrait; Plates 213 and 240 in color. Near contemporary dark red morocco; stamped in blind; spine lettered in gilt with eight raised bands in pairs; gilt-ruled inside dentelles. All edges trimmed, gilt, and gauffred. Decorative aqua and gilt endpapers. Joints, bands and spine ends fairly worn; edges and corners somewhat less so; some soiling, discoloration, and surface scratches; pale squares at bases of all three spines, possibly from earlier label. Binding of first volume completely detached from text block. Some wear to endpapers, possibly from removed bookplates; a small amount of chipping at fore-edges of free endpapers. Marginal damp stains throughout all volumes; occasional spots of foxing and thumbsoiling to interior; a few tissue guards missing, a few others rumpled or sliced. Chunk out of fore-edge of first vignette title-page, extending into tinting but not affecting text or illustration. Lacking Plate 183, "Part of the Ruins of a Temple on the Island of Bigge, Nubia." Overall very good text block in a good binding. "No publication before this had presented so comprehensive a series of views of the monuments, landscape, and people of the Near East"--DNB. Abbey, Travel, 388 ("The six volumes are a new edition, in smaller format, of the two great three-volume works collectively known as Roberts's Holy Land").
