David Roberts. Egypt & Nubia, From Drawings Made on the Spot...With Historical Descriptions by William Brockedon...London: F. G. Moon, 1846[-1849]. First edition. Three large folio volumes in two (24 x 17 inches; 611 x 330 mm.). Three tinted lithographed titles with vignettes, sixty-one tinted lithographed plates (including three frontispieces), sixty half-page tinted lithographs with descriptive text, all by Louis Haghe after Roberts's original drawings, and one engraved map. The entirety of the first volume bound with the first half of the plates from the second (through plate 22), with the exception of the title-leaf and frontispiece, which are bound at the beginning of the second; all remaining plates bound in the second volume, including the map, which is found at the end of the text; guard sheets. Contemporary dark brown half-morocco over pale blue cloth-covered boards (front boards faded); spines, in seven compartments with six raised bands, ruled and decoratively tooled in gilt, with gilt lettering in two compartments; front boards lettered in gilt; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers. Bindings with some modest wear; several small nicks and scuffs along the spines (including some potential biopredation); joints very slightly stressed, front joint of the first volume hinting at starting toward the bottom edge; boards with some routine minor scuffing, deeper gash to the rear board of the first volume (about two and one-quarter inches long in the cloth, extending about another three inches in the leather as a minor scratch); cloth worn along the edges, with the boards partially exposed, possibly stabilized to prevent further fraying and loss; corners renewed. Faint marginal tidemark affecting maybe half of the leaves in the first volume (often trivially, but on occasion up to the entirety of the vertical edge with some of the upper margin as well, nothing affecting an image area was noticed); dampstaining slightly more prevalent in the second volume, especially in the early leaves, with about the same number of plates affected but having a slightly expanded reach, intruding on the image maybe a half-dozen times. Occasional minor spotting, with a touch of marginal soiling scattered throughout; guard sheets lightly foxed and very faintly toned from offsetting. Very good; an attractive, sound set. Abbey, Travel, 272 ("[O]ne of the most important and elaborate ventures of nineteenth-century publishing, and ... the apotheosis of the tinted lithograph," said of Robert's Holy Land (Abbey, Travel, 385), this title's companion work, which, when together, completes an intended set, The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt & Nubia). Tooley 402.
