To determine the Position and Extent of the West Side of North America; its Distance from Asia; and the Practicability of a Northern Passage to Europe. London: Printed by W. and A. Strahan, 1784. First edition. Three large quarto volumes. xcvi, 421, [1, blank]; [xii], 549, [1, blank]; [xii], 558, [1, ads], [1, blank] pages. All maps, charts and plates removed, except the fold-out Appendix II in volume III. Contemporary full tree calf, spines tooled in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, rust and black gilt morocco lettering labels. Bindings worn, joints with later repairs (leather strips affixed over cracking joints, several of which are coming off), text quite foxed, offsetting to some text leaves from absent plates, two volumes with neat previous ownership markings on front pastedowns, bookplates of George Chetwynd, probably Sir George Chetwynd, 2nd Baronet. A poor copy, but still and important book.
