Text in good condition, tab of binding company bill before t.p.All pages in decorative border with added material. Engraved t.p. plus 19 additional full page plates, including four maps, two of which are fold-out and one hand colored. 31 text illustrations. Second edition, revised. From the Krown & Spellman Collection. William Henry Bartlett (1809- 1854), was a topographical artist who was first noticed when he made sketches for the architect John Britton; such early works were published in the latter's Cathedral Antiquities of Britain, 1814-32. Bartless soon after made an extended tour of Europe and the Near East, the result of which was a series of very popular books on travel, filled with the artist's graphic opera. Bartlett died on a homebound voyage between Malta and Marseilles and was buried at sea.
