"One of the best early works on the subject" (Streeter)

Baron Louis Armand de Lahontan. New Voyages to North-America. Containing An Account of the several Nations of that vast Continent; their Customs, Commerce, and Way of Navigation upon the Lakes and Rivers; the several Attempts of the English and French to dispossess one another; with the Reasons of the Miscarriage of the former; and the various Adventures between the French, and the Iroquese Confederates of England, from 1683 to 1694...Illustrated with Twenty-Three Maps and Cuts. London: Printed for John Brindley, 1735. Second English edition. Two twelvemo volumes. [xxiv], [280]; 304 pages. With eighteen (out of twenty) engraved single-page and fold-out maps and plates (volume II lacks the frontispiece and an additional plate). Contemporary full brown calf, boards paneled in blind, with blind floral cornerpieces. Rebacked to style in near contemporary calf, spines numbered in gilt, with brown gilt morocco lettering labels, five raised bands, near contemporary endleaves. Corners strengthened with later calf, some wear and soiling to binding and spines, joints worn, some intermittent foxing, creasing and light soiling in text. Previous owner's small neat ink signature near upper margin of both title-pages. Still, a good copy of this excellent work. Streeter notes that "Lahontan's work is devoted almost entirely to the description of Indian life in Canada, and is one of the best early works on the subject." Howes L25. Sabin 38645.
