One of the Best and Rarest Accounts of Capuchin Travels in the Near East in the Seventeenth Century

[Persia and Armenia]. [Père Gabriel de Chinon]. Relations Nouvelles du Levant; ou Traite's de la Religion, du Gouvernment, & des Coûtumes des Perses, des Armeniens, & des Gaures. Lyon: Jean Thioly, 1671. First edition of this very rare travel book. Twelvemo. [xxviii], 481, [16, contents], [1, Privilege] pages. Bound in contemporary full mottled calf, spine tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, four raised bands. Front joint starting, front hinge cracked, rear hinge starting, minor wear to binding, ink marking on front pastedown. A very good example of this rare travel book. Chinon (n.d.-1670) was a Capuchin missionary who journeyed to the Near East on an ecclesiastical and diplomatic mission, having been sent by Cardinal Richelieu in 1628 (being one of several Capuchins so ordered). This book is one of the most valuable accounts of these missions, and is a very rare item; only one other copy was offered at auction (in 1999). From the collection of a gentleman of New York.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
