Volume I with engraved frontispiece portrait by W. Skelton after John Mortimer, each volume with engraved vignette title page and complete with eighty-seven engraved plates by Dent, Barlow, Corbould & Dent after Hogarth.

First edition. Large octavo. 183 pages. Complete with half-title and fifty-three engraved plates (one folding) by Samuel Ireland, A. M. Ireland, and Jane Ireland, after Hogarth.

    Edwards of Halifax binding; uniformly bound in contemporary tree calf decorated in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands and red and black morocco spine labels lettered in gilt, decorative gilt roll to edges. Inner dentelles decorated with Greek meander design in gilt, marbled endpapers; endpapers lightly rubbed. Internally generally clean and tight, all edges stained yellow; early ink ownership to the title of each volume "Marcus Gage his book - bought at / Halifax July 20th / 1797" and additionally signed "Marcus Gage," somewhat foxed, minor text block edgewear, pencil notations to front of text blocks, some plates trimmed close on fore-edge affecting caption or artist name. All housed in quarter brown morocco over brown cloth clamshell case, spine with five false bands and decorated and lettered in gilt, minor edgewear. Very good or better.
