Narrative of the Expedition of an American Squadron to the China Seas and Japan, Performed in the Years 1852, 1853, and 1854, Under the Command of Commodore M. C. Perry, United States Navy... Washington: A. O. P. Nicholson, 1856.First edition. Three quarto volumes. With eighty-eight tinted lithographed plates in Volume I (missing plate at page 256); twenty-two maps and charts, including fourteen large folding, four smaller folding and four full-page in Volumes I and II; twenty-seven engraved plates in Volume II, including many hand-colored natural history specimens; sixteen full-page engraved diagrams in Volume II; numerous meteorological diagrams and 352 full-page wood-engraved astronomical charts in Volume III. Profusely illustrated with numerous woodcuts throughout the text. Without the extremely rare nude bathing plate found opposite page 408 in Volume I of a few copies.
Publisher's original embossed cloth, with blind-stamped designs on the boards and blind titles on the spine (all the gilt rubbed away). A rather tired set of Perry, with significant wear to the bindings. Spines split and torn on Volumes I and III, with the spine cloth of Volume I partially perished and with inelegant clear tape repairs to the spine. Short cracks to spine of Volume II. Boards of Volume III bowed. Boards rubbed, soiled, and bumped. Bindings shaken. Some gatherings and individual leaves loose in Volume I. Minor to heavy foxing throughout, with some offsetting from the plates. Good condition.
