Description

Tom Lea. Peleliu Landing. El Paso: Carl Hertzog, 1945. Popular edition. Signed by Lea below his printed name on the introduction page: "Tom Lea/ El Paso 1992/ (and 3 Marine Corps wars later)". 4to. 34 pages. Illustrated with ten of the author's original battle sketches. Bound in boards with paper cover printed to imitate the olive green herringbone twill cloth of Marine Corps combat dungarees, with titles printed in black on the front board. Tom Lea combat photograph used as endpapers. Light shelf-wear to boards and some scattered toning to pages, otherwise a very good copy.

    More Information:

As a war correspondent for Life magazine, Lea was present for the first 32 hours of the Marine's assault on Peleliu island. His text and sketches brilliantly capture the terror and shock experienced by the Marines in those first few critical hours. Hertzog's choice of type face, paper and binding is integral to Lea's narrative and sketches and one finds it difficult to image that one could stand without the other. Certainly this work must be counted as one of Hertzog's greatest achievements.
