Military Manuals for the Continental ArmyThomas Simes. The Military Guide for Young Officers [bound with:] Campbell Dalrymple. Extracts From a Military Essay Containing: Reflections on the Raising, Arming, Clothing and Discipline of the British Infantry and Cavalry [and:] The Manual Exercise as Ordered by His Majesty, In the Year 1764. London and Philadelphia: J. Humphreys, R. Bell, and R. Aitken, 1776.
First American edition. Two mismatched octavo volumes, Volume I measures 5.5 x 8.25 inches and Volume II, 5 x 8 inches. , 384; Dictionary unpaginated, Extracts 31, Manual Exercise 35 pages. Plates lacking in Volume II.
Contemporary leather, raised spine bands, titles in gilt on morocco labels on the spine. Spine and corners of Volume II renewed. Volume I contents bright; Volume II with some toning and scattered foxing. Very good.
The shortage of military manuals for the Continental Army necessitated reprinting existing British examples. A wonderful example of Continental ingenuity.
