Description

Early Puritan Text The Sound Beleever

Thomas Shepard. The Sound Beleever. A Treatise of Evangelicall Conversion. Discovering the Work of Christs Spirit, in reconciling of a Sinner to God. London: Andrew Crooke, 1653.

Later edition, presumed fifth. Small octavo. (v), 1-100, 131-199, 240-317 pages, table (3).

Leather over boards, black leather spine label with gilt titles. Extremities rubbed, boards showing loss at edges, particularly at rear head. Spine split at middle with glue reinforcement. Signature near middle of text slipped and reglued. Text block lacking preliminaries and back matter, as is common. Foxing and some dampstaining, with an occasional marking or small closed tear. Inside boards lacking pastedowns with small partially-removed bookseller's label and neat ink markings. Owner's signature on title page. A very good copy.

Shepard was an early Puritan minister in New England and was later a instrumental figure in the creation of Harvard University.

    Sabin 80243.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
