First edition. Quarto. 400, [11, index] pages. Illustrated with 16 plates and 2 maps, colored aquatints and one colored etching. Early calf decorated in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with 5 raised bands and red and black gilt-stamped spine labels, gilt roll to edges. Corners bumped and rubbed with boards showing through, joints worn and weak, heavy edgewear, rubbed and worn with some losses; Tout and H. Sotheran & Sons binder's stamps to front free endpaper verso. Inner dentelles gilt, marbled endpapers; bookplate to front pastedown, hinges reinforced, bookplate unevenly toned. Somewhat foxed, text block unevenly toned, minor chipping to edges. Good or better.

Three-quarter red morocco over marbled boards, stamped in gilt, spine decorated in gilt with five raised bands. Corners just bumped, minor edgewear, marbled boards rubbed and faded. Marbled endpapers, minor soiling, Root & Son binder's stamp to front free endpaper verso. Internally generally clean and tight, top edge trimmed and gilt, other edges trimmed; red ribbon marker frayed, somewhat foxed, offsetting, minor text block edgewear. Very good.
