    Description

Thomas Paine's "Common Sense" Refuted: A 1776 Tory Response Printed in Philadelphia. PRINTED and sold by JAMES HUMPHREYS, junni, The Corner of Black horse alley Front-street, M, DCC, LXXVI. PHILADELPHIA. Second edition, complete, 71pp. Authorship is attribute to Rev. Charles Inglis, 1734-1816, a staunch Tory who served as rector of Trinity Church during the British occupation of New York. Inglis famously prayed for the welfare of King George III while George Washington sat in the congregation, leading the church to be surrounded by militiamen. He returned to England in 1783 during the evacuation of loyalists from New York. An exteremely rare and significant imprint; our research of records going back decades uncovered only a single copy offered by a retail bookseller, and none at auction.

This copy appears to be in period marbled paper wraps, and was in a fire at some point. Accordingly, the edges have been trimmed as shown. Edges are singed and some pages show light to moderate smoke damage, but on the whole the contents are in good condition. 4.875" x 7.75".

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
