Thomas Mann. Der Kleine Herr Friedemann. [Little Herr Friedemann]. Berlin: S. Fischer, Verlag, 1898. First edition. Octavo (7.625 x 4.5 inches; 193 x 115 mm.). [iv], 198 [1, contents], [1, printer's note] pages. Publisher's perfect binding in original illustrated wrappers. Wrappers restored, largely addressing paper loss on the backstrip and preserving structural integrity, without adding additional ink. The uppermost portion of the backstrip (about one inch long) and section (about one and one-half inches) along the front joint, extending a little over half-way into the author's name, perished; upper margin of the front wrapper refreshed; some less prominent work to the foot of the spine and joints. Wrappers very lightly soiled with a few faint marginal splashes and some soft creasing. A few leaves roughly opened along the fore edge of the text block. An attractive restored copy, presents as near fine. Thomas Mann's first book, a collection of novellas and short stories. Uncommon in wrappers.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
