Complete with 120 hand-colored engraved plates, tissue guards, one page of engraved maps, and 17 pages of subscribers' signatures in facsimile. State C of "War Dance" and state F of "Red Jacket." Three volumes. Folio. Volume I: [iv], 206, [2, blank] pages and 48 plates; volume II: [iv], 237, [3, blank] pages and 48 plates; volume III: [vi], 196, [2, The Genuineness of the Portrait of Pocahontas], [1, engraved maps], [17, subscriber's signatures in facsimile], [3, blank] pages and 24 plates. Publisher's half-brown morocco over brown cloth-covered boards, spine and front board lettered and decorated in gilt; edges rubbed and a bit worn, some wear to spine affecting gilt lettering and decorations, heads and tails of spines pushed, 1.75-inch split to front joint of volume III holding but separating from spine and tender, minor stains and scuffs, all edges gilt. Cream-colored endpapers, hinges reinforced with red cloth tape, minor foxing. Internally clean and bright, with some minor offsetting, margin of plate facing page 48 in volume III reinforced to verso, not affecting image. Plates clean with bright colors, minor foxing primarily confined to margins and not affecting images. A very good example of this important set of Americana, "the most colorful portraits of Indians ever executed" (Howes).
