    Description

With 120 Beautifully Hand-Colored Plates of Native Americans

Thomas L. M'Kenney [McKenney] and James Hall. History of the Indian Tribes of North America. Philadelphia; Daniel Rice & James G. Clark, 1842-1842-1844. First edition of "The grandest color plate book issued in the United States up the time of its publication" [Reese]. Title-pages of volumes as follows: volume I in BAL's, state E, volume II is BAL's state C, and volume III is BAL's state B. Three folio volumes. Approximately 20.25 x 14.5 inches. Second issue of "War Dance" text in volume I, BAL's state A of the "War Dance" plate, state C of " Red Jacket" plate. [ii], 204; [ii], 237, [1, blank]; [iv], 196, [2, The Genuineness of the Portrait of Pocahontas], [18, subscriber's list with facsimile signatures] pages. With 120 hand-colored lithographed plates and one uncolored lithographed map. Contemporary half green morocco, spines ruled and lettered in gilt in compartments, five raised bands, all edges gilt and gauffered, marbled endleaves. Volumes I and III with covers detached and spines worn, volume II with wear to edges, some occasional foxing and offsetting to text and plates, some text leaves with short marginal tears and or chips, front blank of volume I with repair to verso, blank portion of page 159 in volume II torn and repaired on verso. Bookplates of Charles Goddard Weld in each volume. Overall, a fair set (in need of careful restoration), with plates still vibrant.

"Its long and checkered publication history spanned twelve years and involved multiple lithographers (mainly Peter S. Duval and James T. Bowen) and publishers, but the final product is one of the most distinctive and important books in Americana. Almost all the plates are portraits of individual Native Americans, the majority painted from life by Charles Bird King (who also reworked the less skillful portraits of James Otto Lewis). The complicated circumstances of its production have left a bibliographical stew of issues and issue points that are yet to be satisfactorily resolved" [Reese]. Each portrait is accompanied by a biographical sketch. Bennett p.79. BAL 6934. Field 992. Howes M129. Reese, Nineteenth Century American Color Plate Books 24. Sabin 43410a.
