Thomas Jefferson. Notes on the State of Virginia. London: John Stockdale, 1787. First English-language edition. Octavo (7.875 x 4.875 inches; 200 x 125 mm.). [iii-vi], 382 pages (bound without half-title); 1794-issue map, likely from the second U. S. edition, supplied and crudely tipped to the front endpaper at a later date; folding chart inserted, full-page map on page [32]; signature G (pages 81-96) bound upside down. Nineteenth century black half-calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine in five compartments with four raised bands tooled in gilt, compartments lettered or stamped and ruled in gilt; page edges sprinkled brown; plain endpapers. Bound after removing the original map, the supplied map causes the front board to rest at an angle. Leather worn at the spine ends and, especially, corners with a few minor scuffs to the backstrip; narrow bruise to the front board; board edges worn with some paper flaking. Map worn with folds splitting, verso with extensive tape repairs. Title-page with previous owner signature and brief notes in manuscript ink, in two distinct hands; folding chart partially split along one fold; text browned with some foxing. Good, housed in a custom clamshell case. Howes J78. Sabin 35896.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
