Presented by Mr. Jefferson to U.S. Senator Dwight Foster of Massachusetts

Thomas Jefferson. A Manual of Parliamentary Practice. For the use of the Senate of the United States. By Thomas Jefferson. Washington City: Printed by Samuel Harrison Smith, 1801. First edition. Presentation copy, with the previous owner's inscription stating that he received the book from Mr. Jefferson: "Dwight Foster's / Book / Presented by / Mr. Jefferson / February 26, 1801." Sixteenmo. Contemporary mottled sheep, with gilt board edges, crudely rebacked at an early date by laying a new piece of leather over the spine and joints, and with a window cut out so the original spine label (now partially perished) is still visible. Binding worn, especially at corners, with some loss. Front hinge repaired with a new free endpaper that attaches both to the front pastedown endpaper and to the adjacent inscribed presentation leaf. Several preliminary leaves loose, including the title, and pages brittle with some edge loss. Ink library stamp on title page, and date stamped in ink on the verso of the title, with an accession number. Edges and sheets dampstained, mostly to the margins and avoiding touching text. Altogether, an interesting copy, presumably given by Jefferson when he was newly elected as the third president of the United States and Mr. Foster was a member of the U.S. Senate. Dwight Foster (1757-1823) was an American politician and attorney from Brookfield, Massachusetts. He represented Massachusetts in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate (1800-1803), and also served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. His brother was U.S. Senator Theodore Foster.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
