    Fuller's Worthies

Thomas Fuller. The History of the Worthies of England. London: printed by J[ohn]. G[rismond]., W[illiam]. L[eybourne]., and W[illiam]. G[odbid]., 1662.

    Folio. [8], 30, 33-70, 73-144, 149-300, 317-368, 16, 13-100, 105-144, 149-258, 257 [i.e. 261]-354, 232, [4], 60 pages. Engraved frontispiece. The twelve-page eighteenth-century index often found bound into copies is here present.

Later full brown calf over wooden boards. Raised bands. Gilt borders to boards. Gilt lettering to spine. Marbled edges and endpapers. Some chipping of leather to the extremities. Small bookplate of previous owner on front pastedown. A very good, clean copy.

This massive posthumous book is Fuller's best known work. It is a chatty digressive series of biographies of prominent individuals from England's past. The book is arranged geographically, with the biographical sketches sharing passages about various qualities and oddities of the English counties.
