    Description

Theodore Dreiser. An American Tragedy. New York: Boni & Liveright, 1925. First edition, one of 795 copies signed by the author (this being copy number 107). Additionally, this copy is a presentation copy, inscribed by Dreiser on the half-title of volume I for important bibliophile and collector, Frederick W. Skiff: "For / F. W. Skiff / from / Theodore Dreiser / N.Y. May-1926." Affixed to the front free endpaper of volume II are two portions of the shipping paper, with Dreiser's return address in New York City, and the shipping address of Skiff in Portland, Oregon, both in Dreiser's hand. Two octavo volumes. [vi], [1]-431, [1, blank]; [x], [1]-407, [1, blank] pages. With inserted signed limitation page in volume I. Bound in the publisher's half tan cloth over blue boards, facsimile signature of Dreiser in red on both front boards, spines stamped in gilt and blind. Blue endleaves. Housed in the original publisher's slipcase, with a printed paper label. Minor rubbing, a few faint scratch-marks, thumbsoiling to bindings. Several leaves unopened in both volumes. Skiff's bookplate on the front pastedown of each volume. Light edgewear, soiling to slipcase. A fine set. Basis for the 1951 film noir classic, A Place in the Sun, directed by George Stevens, and starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.
