The Thomas Winthrop Streeter Collection of Americana Volumes 1 - 7, Plus Index. Compiled by Edward J. Lazare (New York: Parke-Burnet Galleries, Inc., 1966-1970), publisher's blue cloth boards with gilt titles, 4to (7" x 10"), as new with glassine wraps, small "Ex-Libris TWS" labels on each front pastedown. Thomas Winthrop Streeter was born in Concord, New Hampshire in 1883 and, after graduating with a law degree from Harvard in 1907, practiced law in Boston. He moved to New York in 1917 and participated in various business enterprises until his retirement from active business in 1939. He then dedicated himself to his beloved collection of early Americana, compiling the largest Texana collection in private hands. It included not only Texas imprints, but also imprints from Mexico and the rest of the world that were about Texas. In the mid-1950s, he published the five volume Bibliography of Texas for which he received an honorary doctorate from Dartmouth College. Throughout the years, Streeter donated or sold parts of his collection to various institutions. At his death in 1965, according to his wishes, Streeter's remaining collection, comprising some 5,000 rare volumes, was sold in seven auctions held at Parke-Bernet Galleries in New York between 1966 and 1969. These present volumes are the catalogs for those monumental sales; a reference set considered a basic requirement for any collector or dealer in Americana. Often found only in partial sets, this is as nice a complete set as you're likely to find. Courtesy of P. Gervais Bell, Houston.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
