    Description

    With Seventy-Three Wonderful Hand-Colored Plates

The Costume of the Russian Empire, Illustrated by a Series of Seventy-Three Engravings. With Descriptions in English and French. London: Printed for William Miller, 1804 [i.e.. ca. 1820].

First edition. Second issue with 1804 imprint. Folio. Title and text in French and English. Seventy-three hand-colored stipple-engraved plates by J. Dadley.

Contemporary burgundy straight-grained morocco, covers decoratively paneled in blind and gilt, spines gilt, all edges gilt. Joints and edges worn. Some rubbing and slight offsetting adjacent to plates. Former owner's book plate on front pastedown and unobtrusive embossed stamp on the front free endpaper. A very good copy of this beautiful volume.

The Costume of the Russian Empire was one of a series of six costume books published by William Miller over a four-year period. The watermarks on the paper are here dated 1820; the present copy must certainly be a reissue by Thomas M'Lean of Miller's successful work.

Abbey Travel 245; Colas 702. From the Juana de Laban Dance Collection.
