Description

The Anti-Slavery Papers of James Russell Lowell. Boston and New York: Houghton Mifflin and Company, 1902. Two 8vo volumes. Grangerized and extra illustrated with dozens of engravings and documents. Included are eight documents related to slavery such as slave sale receipts and legal filings, as well as autograph material by historical figures. Of note:

[Slavery] Partially Printed Judgment. One page, 6.5" x 7.75", District of Columbia, June 18, 1842. A judgement by a jury presenting "Slave George the property of Hamia Taylor and Slave Franklin the property of Walter Chew, for setting fire to the carpenter's shop of Asa Gladman."

Truman Smith Autograph Letter Signed. Four pages, 8" x 10", Washington City, March 6, 1842. Great content letter regarding the political situation of the times, particularly the state of Whig affairs. In small part: "there is much discord among the Whigs in Congress than you would suppose - the great difficulty consists in settling the line of conduct & policy to be pursued towards the Presdt. & his administration - most of the Eastern Whigs think we should pursue the path of conciliation & of moderation & get for the country all the good we can out of the Presdt & his Cabinet. But many of our Western & Southern friends are for war."

Other autograph items inlaid in the book include:
Horace Greeley Autograph Letter Signed. One page. April 27, 1870.
Levi Woodbury Letter Signed. July 28, 1831.
Lewis Cass Letter Signed. One page. March 28, 1855. Acknowledging receipt of Congressional reports and forty copies of the census reports.
    David Wilmot Clipped Signature.
Daniel Webster Twice Signed Autograph Document.

Overall condition of the documents are very good to fine, with separations occurring at folds in only one instance. Full morocco binding with gilt raised spines and title; evidence of repair at spines and joints of both volumes.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
