Tennessee Williams. TLS. Nola [New Orleans]: 12/12/71. To his friend, Dr. Martin Palmer of Anchorage, Alaska.

    More Information:

Tennessee Williams. Typed Letter Signed. Nola [New Orleans]: 12/12/71. Addressed "Dear "Doc" Martin" to his friend, Dr. Martin Palmer of Anchorage, Alaska.

The letter is typed in black ink, but is dated and signed in blue ball-point. One quarto page on one blank white quarto leaf. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. In this letter, Williams discusses a cancer scare he had recently undergone based on the advice (frightening yet sound) of a mutual friend. Two horizontal creases, some mild creasing and wear at edges. Overall, a near fine letter with excellent and very personal content. With the original typed mailing envelope. More information online.

"I love the great doctor, but he is something of a gloom-pot. It was he when informed me that "breast carcinoma is a rare thing in men but rare things do happen' and advised me to cancel my Oriental junket with Oliver [presumably his close friend, poet Oliver Evans] and check into Truro hospital immediately for the removal of that little lump under my left tit. Let's say he was right to warn me, but it did give me a very anxious crossing of the Pacific."

Later in the letter, he discusses upcoming plans - a trip to Asia: "I love it over there. I also have "yellow fever". And a romantic interest in Hong Kong."

Still later, he discusses Oliver's illness (presumably a brain tumor or the like): "Whatever we think or hear from now on of a nature that would or might discourage Oliver in his truly heroic commitment to life, let's have a conspiracy of silence about it. Don't write me what you learn if anything. Call me collect at 581-9375. I feel that I can be trusted with the information and that it would be useful in setting up the program and schedule."
