    T. S. Eliot. Collection of Seventeen Typed Letters, Signed, Written to His Niece, Charlotte Stearns Gussow (née Smith). [Various places: 1931-1962]. Original letters. Various sizes, but mainly quarto sheets. Approximately 9.5 x 8.25 inches. On various papers, including Air Letter paper and a few on Faber and Faber stationery. Letters folded and creased, some edgewear, a few in original mailing envelopes. Generally very good. Letters are mainly signed "Tom". The letters to his niece (nicknamed "Chardy") cover a variety of topics, including her marriage (apparently her second marriage to James Gussow), health issues (she seems to have suffered from shingles), her mother's (Eliot's sister, Marian) health, and many other topics. One letter, dated "19th October 1931" is signed by Eliot and his first wife, Vivienne Haigh Eliot (this is unusual, due to the fact that Eliot and Vivienne had a stormy marriage, and would separate in 1933 (although they would remain married until her death in 1947; their difficult relationship and her mental health issues are said to have inspired Eliot's landmark poem, The Waste Land (1922)). Also in this collection are two typed letters signed to Chardy from Eliot's second wife, Valerie; two typed letters signed by Faber and Faber editor (Faber and Faber was Eliot's publisher later in life) Peter du Santoy; Nine autograph letters signed by Enid Faber, wife of Sir Geoffrey Faber (and, after his death in 1961, a director of Faber and Faber). Also included are two tickets for T. S. Eliot's memorial service on Thursday, February 4th, 1965 at Westminster Abbey. From a T. S. Eliot Family Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
