Stephanus Niger; Flavius Philostratus. Dialogus quo quicquid in grecarum literarum penetralibus reconditum.... Milan, 1517.

    More Information:

Stephanus Niger [Stefano Negri] and Flavius Philostratus. Milan:             Alessandro Minuziano, 1517.

First edition. Small folio. a-c6, A-D8, E6, F-2C8, 2D-2E6. [Lacks 2F10 and 2G4.] [18], 211 folia. Full modern calf, blind tooled ruling and panelling, banded spine with title in gilt lettering. Title in manuscript along bottom edges.  Very light browning and foxing, occasional dampstains. Small notches in side margins of a3-6 and b1-2, never effecting text. Names in old hand on a1 (title page), marginal notes in old hand throughout text; library stamp on verso of a1 with bleedthrough and ink transfer to adjacent pages.  Text complete, but labelling grants no K gathering, foliation has no folia numbered 109, and labels 63 as 93, 76 as 79, and 124 as 125.  Otherwise a very nice copy.

"Livre excellent et très rare, qui conserve encore une haute réputation" - Brunet.

Negri (circa 1475-circa 1540) born at Casal-Maggiore was a student of Demetrius Chalcondyles and taught Greek in Milan. Philostratus' Heroicus is a dialogue in which the heroes of the Trojan War appear. This copy is textually complete but lacks the index and glossary of Greek phrases.

    Adams N275. Isaac 13573. Brunet IV, 79. Hoffmann III, 80. EDIT 16 CNCE 47086.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
