Description

Stanley Weinbaum. Dawn of Flame and Other Stories. Jamaica, NY: Ruppert Printing Service, 1936.

First edition, Currey priority B. Twelvemo. 313 pages.

Original black Fabrikoid with gilt titles on the front panel. All edges stained red. Light shelf wear to covers. First gathering is a bit loose. Frontis (photographic portrait of Weinbaum) has become detached. A sound copy of a rare book in very good condition.

The author's posthumous first book. Essentially a memorial volume prepared by the Milwaukee Fictioneers, an informal fan group of which Weinbaum was a member. Included are seven short stories and novelettes by Weinbaum, including the first book appearance of his classic "A Martian Odyssey". Fivehundred copies were printed but only 250 were bound (the remaining 250 unbound copies were destroyed in a flood). Five of the bound copies have an introduction by Raymond A. Palmer, the remainder (including this one) have one by Lawrence Keating. From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
