Samuel Stanhope Smith. AN ESSAY ON THE CAUSES AND VARIETY OF COMPLEXION AND FIGURE IN THE HUMAN SPECIES. TO WHICH ARE ADDED, ANIMADVERSIONS ON CERTAIN REMARKS MADE IN THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS ESSAY, BY MR. CHARLES WHITE, IN A SERIES OF DISCOURSES DELIVERED BEFORE THE LITERARY AND PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY OF MANCHESTER IN ENGLAND. ALSO, STRICTURES ON LORD KAIMS'S DISCOURSE ON THE ORIGINAL DIVERSITY OF MANKIND. AND AN APPENDIX. BY...PRESIDENT OF THE COLLEGE OF NEW-JERSEY; AND MEMBER OF THE AMERICAN PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY. THE SECOND EDITION...ENLARGED AND IMPROVED. New-Brunswick [NJ]: Published by J. Simpson and Co. And Brannan and Morford, Philadelphia; and E. Morford, Willington, and Co. Charleston [S.C.] A. Deare, Printer, 1810. 411, [1 blank] pp. Front cover gone, rear leather cover and spine with gilt lettered label present [worn, chipped]. Several leaves trimmed a bit smaller [no text loss]. Scattered foxing, a few corners folded over. Good+. In this influential pamphlet Smith, President and Professor of Moral Philosophy at the College of New Jersey, "flatly contradicted the theory of the separate creation of the different races. Independently of revelation, he arrived at a belief in the genetic unity of mankind, ascribing the existence of racial types to the influences of climate and 'the state of society.' He gave much thought to the problem of slavery and devised a plan whereby, he believed, freedmen might become economically independent." DAB. Moreover, "far in advance of his time," id., he argues here that "The minutest causes, acting constantly, and long continued, will necessarily create great and conspicuous differences among mankind." This second edition includes Appendix: "Of The Natural Bravery And Fortitude Of The American Indians-Or The History Of Their Manners As It Relates To Their Military Expeditions, And Their Conduct To Those Who Are Taken Captive In War." AI 21369 [13]. LCP 9547.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
