Second edition of Newton's Opticks, second issue with 1718 title-page, and with the leaf of advertisements at the rear. Octavo. [viii], 382, [2, ads] pages. Complete with twelve folding plates. Contemporary calf. Covers missing, spine heavily worn, first two blank leaves loose, third blank partially loose, final blank is loose, second to last leaf coming loose, a few text leaves a bit loose, some toning, thumbsoiling throughout. A fair copy of a rare and important book.

    This is the first octavo edition of this work (second issue), with the plates newly reduced to fit the smaller format. The number of Queries at the end of the third book was increased from 16 to 31 for this edition, including the Query 28, asking "Are not all Hypotheses erroneous which have hitherto been invented for explaining the Phenomena of Light, by new Modification of the Rays?" Babson 134.
