    Inscribed and Signed by Shackleton

Sir Ernest Shackleton. South. The Story of Shackleton's Last Expedition 1914-1917. London: William Heinemann, 1920. Early printing (issued four months after the first impression). Warmly inscribed by Shackleton, "To S.W.A. Hutchison / With grateful thanks / for kindnesses / from / Ernest Shackleton / January 1921" on the front free endpaper. Octavo. 367 pages. Illustrated. Folding map "The Voyage of the Endurance" bound in back. Contemporary newspaper clippings regarding Shackleton and a real photo postcard laid-in. Publisher's original black cloth decorated and lettered in silver. Boards a bit scuffed with some wear along the extremities and slightly bumped corners; hinges worn; endpapers browned, else a very good copy. From a private collection in North Carolina.

    More Information:

Shackleton's own account of his attempt to make the first crossing of the Antarctic continent - 1800 miles sea to sea. The ill-fated expedition suffered severe hardships after their ship Endurance was crushed in the ice. Amazingly the entire expedition survived as a result of Shackleton's "supreme qualities of leadership."

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
