William Styron. Two Autograph Letters Signed, Written to Barnaby Conrad. Two letters from Styron to friend, fellow author, and director of the Santa Barbara Writer's Conference, Barnaby Conrad, including: ALS dated 1 November, 1996, signed "Bill." One 8.5 x 11" sheet, with Styron's name and Roxbury, CT address stamped at top. Styron thanks Conrad for sending him a copy of his latest book, Namedropping, and offers several compliments. He also accepts an invitation from Conrad: "For once I'm going to break my rule about never leaving the Vineyard in the summer and accept your gracious invitation to be the honoree at your 25th [anniversary of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference]. You've done such a great job over the years that I couldn't turn down such a flattering gesture-also I'm sure I'll have a good time, as I did some years ago." Several folds, a few creases. Very good. [and:] Postcard dated 24 May, 1998, signed "Bill." Postcard with Styron's printed Roxbury, CT address on front, and with F. Scott Fitzgerald stamp. Styron comments on the recent biography of him (presumably William Styron: A Life by James L. W. West): " I had mixed feelings-not about the book itself, which I found well-done for the most part, and accurate-but because it makes me feel like the subject for taxidermy, stuffed before my demise." He also thanks Conrad for the copy of Conrad's book chronicling his stay at the Betty Ford Clinic: "What hell addiction is!" A few shallow bends. Very good.
