Presentation Copy Inscribed and Signed by Maugham

    W. Somerset Maugham. The Moon and Sixpence. A Novel. London: William Heinemann, 1919.

Presentation copy of the first edition, inscribed and signed by Maugham on the front free endpaper in 1920 to American author and poet Carolyn Wells (Wells' bookplate affixed to the front pastedown). Small octavo. 263 pages.

Publisher's green cloth lettered and decorated in black. Housed in a custom quarter leather slipcase and chemise. Moderate wear to the board edges. Bumped corners. Top edge dusty. Text noticeably toned throughout. Publisher's catalog at rear removed, with remnants in the gutter, else a very good copy.

    More Information:

"The author based The Moon and Sixpence largely on the life of Paul Gauguin, an artist who had long intrigued him. Maugham traveled to Tahiti with Gerald Haxton in 1915 specifically to research Gauguin's life and to make notes for the book he intended to write. Interestingly, when the book appeared in 1919, contemporary reviewers, including Katherine Mansfield, failed to connect the character of Charles Strickland with Gauguin" (Rothschild and Whiteman, William Somerset Maugham: A Catalogue of The Loren and Frances Rothschild Collection..., p. 129-130).
