Inscribed by W. Somerset Maugham

    W. Somerset Maugham. The Bishop's Apron. London: Chapman and Hall, 1906.

First edition. Inscribed by Maugham on the front free endpaper: "For / Ernest Randall / This very early novel. / W. Somerset Maugham." Octavo. 311 pages.

A nicely rebound copy, using portions of the original gold-stamped red cloth on the front, back, and spine. Edges appear to be trimmed slightly for the new binding. There is foxing affecting the first few pages of both the front and rear. Housed in a custom quarter red morocco box. A very good copy that has been strengthened and improved with expert restoration.

Maugham, a frugal author, often recycled his own material. The genesis of this novel was a short story, Cupid and the Vicar of Swale, which he wrote for Punch magazine in 1900. He later reworked this story into The Bishop's Apron as well as the play Loaves and Fishes.

Stott A9a. Morgan, p. 85. From the Collection of Norman F. Moore.
