    Susan B. Anthony Signed set of the History of Woman Suffrage presented to Caroline Merrick, president of the Louisiana State Woman Suffrage Association

    Susan B. Anthony Signed Presentation Set of History of Woman Suffrage. Four volumes, 4to, published 1881-1902; uniformly rebound in brown calf with gilt titles on spines.

    Volume I, 878 pages; published by Fowler & Wells in New York in 1881. Signed, "With the kind regards of yours sincerely & gratefully / Susan B. Anthony / Rochester N.Y. / New Orleans, La. March 14, 1885" on the half title page.

    Volume II, 952 pages, published by Fowler & Wells in New York in 1881. Signed, "With the regards of yours sincerely Susan B. Anthony / Rochester N.Y. / New Orleans La. - / March 14, 1885-" on the front endpaper.

    Volume III, 1013 pages; published by Charles Mann in Rochester, New York in 1887. Not signed.

    Volume IV, 1144 pages; self-published by Susan B. Anthony in Rochester [1902]. With long inscription on the front endpaper: "Mrs. Caroline E. Merrick / 1404 Napoleon Avenue / New Orleans - Louisiana - / This book I send you for its good word and for our cause since the early eighties - we have reaped a rich harvest - but the first score of years of the 20th Century must bring us still larger gains. With the old love and memory of your good husband - I am affectionately yours / Susan B. Anthony / 17 Madison Street / Rochester - N.Y. / June 9, 1903." At the top of the page is an ownership signature by Edwin T. Merrick, likely husband of Caroline Merrick.

    Caroline Merrick organized the first women's suffrage association in Louisiana in 1892. The Portia Club, as it was known, had nine charter members. By 1896, state-wide interest in Louisiana encouraged the group to establish the State Woman Suffrage Association with Caroline Merrick as its president.

    Condition: Signature page of Volume I has small tears and chipping along the gutter from a previous repair. Heavy foxing to title page and frontispiece but interior pages are clean. Volume II has similar foxing to front endpapers and title page and frontispiece with clean interior pages. Volume III has light shipping to last few pages at very edges, not affecting any text. Volume IV has a few tears in gutter on last page, otherwise very good. The original bindings are present, and can be included with the lot upon request.
