Richard Adams. Watership Down. New York: Macmillan Publishing Company, 1972.

First American edition. With a one page Typed Letter Signed by the author tipped-in vertically between the front free endpaper and the half-title page. Octavo. 429 pages.

Publisher's original beige boards and matching cloth backstrip with titles in gilt on the spine. Light shelf wear with some soiling to the edges. Text block ever-so-slightly skewed. Internal contents clean and tight. Dust jacket moderately soiled. Overall, a very good copy.

In the brief letter Adams writes in part: "I did not want to be a writer during my days as a civil servant; and I wrote 'Watership Down' simply at the behest of my two daughters, then aged nine and seven, who asked me to write down for them the story which I had told them orally." From the Robert and Diane Yaspan Collection.
